Hokkaido University has dormitories for singles, couples, and families for foreign researchers engaged in research or education at Hokkaido University.
In principle, the period of stay is from 1 month to 1 year, but due to the large number of applicants, priority is given to short-term residents who cannot afford to rent an apartment. Specifically, those who stay for 1 month or more and less than 6 months, and those who stay for 6 months or more and less than 1 year.
There are three dormitories for researchers, all within walking distance from the Sapporo Campus.

*Since Hokkaido University Foreign Scholars’ Accommodation is an old building with thin walls, you may hear the sounds of life in the next room. Also, due to the structure of the building, it is easy for mold to grow, and there are rooms that smell like mold. Therefore, please submit your application for occupancy after understanding and accepting these circumstances.

*For all dormitories, those who apply to move in after October 2019 will be required to pay a security deposit of 50,000 yen at the time of the first payment. This security deposit will be used for unpaid expenses (boarding fee, utility bills, etc.) and repair expenses in the event that the resident damages the facilities in the room. If there are no outstanding fees or repair costs, a full refund will be issued after moving out.

Other accommodations available for foreign researchers

Regarding expansion of the occupancy limit (*) for International Student Dormitories

In order to deal with the shortage of dormitories for foreign researchers, some of the international International Student Dormitories (Hokkaido University International House Kita 8 1-5, Hokkaido University International House Kita 23 1, Hokkaido University International House Fushimi) will be made available. It is provided as a dormitory for foreign researchers.
However, usage fees are set higher than those for international students.
Since the recruitment cycle for international students is every 6 months, it is difficult to move in for a longer period, but it may be possible to move in for a short period of time, so please contact us.
