Procedures for changing the expiration date of your Individual Number Card due to a change in period of stay
The expiration date of Individual Number Card issued to foreign students (excluding permanent residents) is the expiration date of the period of stay at the time of issuance of the card. If you have applied to renew your period of stay, please apply to extend it by the expiration date of your Individual Number Card.
Even if you renew your residence card, the expiration date of your Individual Number Card will not change automatically.
・Items required for the procedure
- Individual Number Card (4-digit password (PIN) required)
- Residence card
If your Individual Number card has expired
If you do not apply for an extension by the expiration date printed on your Individual Number card (the same date as the expiration date of your period of stay), the card will expire and a fee (1,000 yen) will be charged to reissue the card.
If you are unable to get your new residence card in time for the expiration date of your Individual Number Card
If you apply for permission to extend your period of stay before the expiration date of your period of stay and permission is not granted by the expiration date of your Individual Number card, you can extend the expiration date of your Individual Number Card by two months as a special measure until permission is granted. Once permission to extend your period of stay is granted, you will need to change the expiration date of your Individual Number card to match your new period of stay, so you will need to go through the procedure again.
・Items required for the procedure
- Present your residence card (with a "Residency Period Extension Application in Progress" stamp on the back) or the online application acceptance email.
- Individual Number Card (4-digit PIN required)
*Please note, however, that if your Individual Number Card has expired, you will not be able to apply for a special extension.
