Overview
This course covers a part of basic organic chemistry including aromaticity, substitution and elimination reactions. The last part of the course introduces the chemistry of the carbonyl group. – Gain an understanding of the electronic parameters that governs reactivity and stability with special focus on aromaticity. – Understand the mechanistic differences in substitution and elimination reactions. – Distinguish the mechanistic differences between polar and radical reactions. – Get an insight into the chemistry mediated by transition-metal-catalyst. This course aims to detail the chemistry of one of the most important functional groups, the carbonyl group. We will be also studying the chemistry of amines, which are important motifs found in a variety of organic compounds, including pharmaceuticals. i) Gain a deep understanding of the reactivity of the carbonyl group, including the reactions at the alpha carbon. ii) Recognize the importance and reactivity of amines, one of the most widely found moieties in organic compounds. iii) Understand the fundamentals of the pericyclic reactions. This course aims to provide important tools to design synthetic methodologies based on the learned fundamentals concepts with focus on oxidation and reduction reactions. The last part of the course describes practical techniques to propose reasonable reaction mechanism based on both theory and experimental evidence. – Get an understanding of the use of protecting groups for achieving chemoselectivity. – Develop skills for the synthesis of medium size molecules, especially aromatic heterocycles. – Develop skills to analyze reaction mechanism based on concepts and experimental data.
