1st and 2nd year in Department of Chemistry

There are 3 principle areas in physical chemistry, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and kinetics. In Physical Chemistry A, B and C, we will start from necessary maths and learn the quantum mechanics of simple systems such a single atom or molecule and how it interacts with its environment. We will then have a closer look at the symmetry of a molecule and how it affects the quantum mechanical properties of it. After that, we will learn the description of macroscopic system of a huge number of particles by thermodynamics. Statistical mechanics will be introduced to study the distribution of physical quantities among particles. Finally, the we will use chemical kinetics to understand the rate of chemical reactions and their mechanisms.
