Message
My research focuses on the history and development of the Japanese language from the perspectives of notation, vocabulary, usage, and grammar. Up to now, I have used transcripts of debates in the Imperial Diet and textbooks for non-native learners of Japanese published from the Meiji period up to World War II as primary materials, and have examined these sources to illustrate how the Japanese language has developed over time. I have also investigated the backgrounds of the individuals who produced such teaching materials.
In my current research, I am particularly engaged in building corpora of historical Japanese texts. This includes compiling a corpus based on the language of the Imperial Diet Proceedings, as well as examining Japanese language textbooks for non-native learners published in the modern period while working to build corpora of these materials. In addition, I am involved in the transcription of historical documents from the early modern to modern periods and in preparing these materials for corpus-based analysis.
I am really looking forward to meeting all of our students on MJSP.
