I am a British astrophysicist who has been living in Sapporo for the past two years. I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Durham (U.K.) and my PhD in the University of Exeter (U.K.). My research focuses on the structure of galaxies, specifically why they display magnificent spiral arm features and how they impact the evolution of the galaxy. Rather than the traditional view of astronomers using telescopes for their work, I use numerical simulations and large supercomputers to replicate these grand celestial objects and then compare them with what we see in the real Universe. In my spare time I enjoy a good run (when the snow isn’t too heavy!), and have been practicing karate and rock climbing for the last several years. As with most astronomers, I’m an avid sci-fi fan, which spurred my early interest in space and the great unknown.
